Beechwood
Beechwood is characterised by its hardness and even structure, making it particularly robust and durable.
Colour: pale yellow to reddish-white, reddish after steaming
Hardness: very hard and dense
Grain: streaky, even, and subtle
Properties: ideal for precise shaping. FSC Certified
Pearwood
Pearwood impresses with its fine texture and pleasant feel. It is moderately heavy and shows an elegant, subtle grain.
Colour: light with reddish-brown tones
Hardness: medium hardness, moderately heavy
Grain: fine and plain, often subtle and even
Properties: ideal for long-lasting brush bodies
Thermobeech
Thermally modified timber (TMT) is wood treated at high temperatures, and this process changes its characteristics in such a way that it is sometimes describes as "domestic tropical timber".
This smoky, slightly rougher surface, results from a specific heat and pressure being applied to the wood to ensure consistent colouring throughout, creating an eye-catching effect. It creates new characteristics, such as reduced water absorption, longer durability, resistance against fungi and insects.
Colour: darker than untreated beech
Hardness: hard and resilient
Grain: even, often enhanced by thermal treatment
Properties: ideal for brush bodies that require high durability
Boxwood
Colour: Pale yellowish-brown
Grain: Fine and smooth, typically straight or slightly irregular
Hardness: Very hard and dense
Texture: Very fine and even, with a natural lustre
Properties: Exceptionally durable and ideal for detailed carving and turning
Best Uses: Perfect for small items such as chess pieces, musical instruments, tool handles, and decorative inlays due to its ability to hold fine detail
Cherrywood
Cherrywood, is highly valued in woodworking for its beauty, workability, and aging properties.
Colour: Freshly cut - light pinkish-brown to reddish-brown
Grain: Typically straight, but can have attractive waves or curls
Hardness: Hard enough for durability, easy to work with hand and machine tools
Texture: Fine, even texture with a smooth finish
Properties: Develops a lustrous patina with age
Best Uses: Perfect for small items due to its ability to hold fine detail
Olivewood
Olivewood has a richly coloured and beautifully detailed hardwood.
Colour: Creamy or yellowish-brown base with dramatic dark brown to black streaks
Grain: Highly varied and striped or marbled grain patterns - each piece is unique
Hardness: Very hard, strong and dense
Texture: Fine, and smooth with a natural oily or lustrous finish
Properties: Naturally resistant to wear and moisture (not outdoor rot resistant)
