Wood
Brush and broom heads are traditionally made from wood, mostly beech. For high-quality fine brush models, rare woods such as pear, maple, ash and olive are used. All woods are first air dried over several months and then placed in a drying room to reduce the final moisture content. Wood-stain, wax or oil is applied to give the surface fine finishing and protection.
Beech
Beech wood is characterized by its hardness and even structure, making it particularly robust and durable.
Color: pale yellow to reddish-white, reddish after steaming
Hardness: very hard and dense
Grain: streaky, even, and subtle
Properties: ideal for precise shaping. FSC Certified
Pearwood
Pearwood impresses with its fine texture and pleasant feel. It is moderately heavy and shows an elegant, subtle grain.
Color: light with reddish-brown tones
Hardness: medium hardness, moderately heavy
Grain: fine and plain, often subtle and even
Properties: ideal for long-lasting brush bodies
Thermobeech
Thermally modified timber (TMT) is wood treated at high temperatures, and this process changes its characteristics in such a way that it is sometimes describes as "domestic tropical timber".
This smoky, slightly rougher surface, results from a specific heat and pressure being applied to the wood to ensure consistent colouring throughout, creating an eye-catching effect. It creates new characteristics, such as reduced water absorption, longer durability, resistance against fungi and insects.
Colour: darker than untreated beech
Hardness: hard and resilient
Grain: even, often enhanced by thermal treatment
Properties: ideal for brush bodies that require high durability
Metal pins
Metal pins are often used in brushes that require particularly intensive care or cleaning. They are extremely durable and stable.
Coloir: metallic, silvery, or coated
Hardness: very hard and firm
Texture: smooth and stable
Properties: ideal for detangling hair or for thorough cleaning, especially for pets or carpets
Wooden pins
Wooden pins are a natural alternative to plastic or metal pins in brushes. They offer gentle care and have a pleasant feel. The wooden pins are made from hornbeam and treated with oil, making them very resistant to external influences.
Colour: wood-coloured, depending on the type of wood
Hardness: medium, slightly flexible
Texture: smooth but grippy
Properties: ideal for sensitive scalps, gently massages, and is anti-static, perfect for hairbrushes.
Explaining fibres & hair
Horse hair
Horsehair is a natural material obtained from the tails of horses (stiff). It combines strength with a certain softness, making it versatile.
Colour: dark brown - black
Hardness: medium, with some flexibility
Texture: elastic and slightly springy
Properties: excellent for shoe brushes, upholstery brushes, and personal care products. Horsehair does not clump, which makes it particularly durable, especially in brooms.
Mane hair
Mane hair is obtained from the mane of horses and is known for its softness and flexibility. It is often used in the production of high-quality brushes.
Colour: light brown - dark
Hardness: medium - soft
Texture: smooth and supple
Properties: Perfect for caring for delicate surfaces, ideal for clothing brushes and hair care products.
Goats hair
This extremely fine and silky soft hair is particularly suited for use in baby, face and other cosmetic brushes. Due to its excellent dust retention, the material is also used in various other brush types e.g. dusters. To remove dust from the brush, pass a fine metal comb through the hair or gently rinse it in hand warm soapy water.
Colour: white to cream-colored.
Hardness: very soft.
Texture: fine and smooth.
Properties: perfect for cleaning delicate surfaces, such as furniture and skincare products. It is dust-binding and ensures thorough, gentle cleaning.
Coco fibre
Coco is harvested from the husk of the cocos nucifera palm coconut. The fibres are stripped from the outside of the nut and undergo an involved process known as 'retting'. Coco fibre can be up to 300mm long and is characterised by its toughness, its naturally resistant and lightweight.
Natural bristles
The bristles are light coloured or naturally black. The longer the bristles, the firmer they are, and also more expensive. They come from wild boars and are known for their durability and elasticity. They are excellent for hair care or for cleaning surfaces and hands.
Colour: light - dark
Hardness: Medium - hard
Texture: elastic and resilient
Properties: ideal for brushes used both for hair care and cleaning tasks
Arenga
Or gumati is a palm leaf fibre that is produced mainly from the leaves of the sugar palm. Its colour can range from dark grey to blue-black. Its finer and softer than other palm fibres and yet tough and elastic. It is particularly durable and water-repellent.
Color: dark brown - black
Hardness: hard and coarse
Texture: stiff and robust
Properties: ideal for brooms and brushes used outdoors, especially for surfaces that need to be cleaned wet or damp.
Tampico
The yellow leaf fibre of the agave cactus. This is a very robust fibre, resistant to acid and alkakline solutions and to heat. Good elasticity and optimum water absorption make the fibre suitable for many applications, including household, massage and nail brushes.
Colour: light - dark brown
Hardness: hard - resilient
Texture - Coarse & still
Properties - Highly resistant to moisture and heat, making it ideal for heavy-duty cleaning tasks and outdoor applications.
Union fibre
Union fibre is a blend of hard plant fibres, typically fibre and Bassine. This combination allows for different levels of hardness, making union fibre suitable for a variety of cleaning tasks.
Colour: yellowish - brown
Hardness: hard - tough
Texture: coarse and firm
Properties: ideal for tough cleaning jobs, especially outdoors or for heavy soiling. The different hardness levels of the fibres make them particularly versatile.
